Abstract

The study of reference evapotranspiration is important for the proper management of water resources and for agricultural planning in the Amazon region. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the Hargreaves and Samani equation in the State of Pará, and to propose local adjustments of their parameters in relation to the Penman-Monteith equation. The adjustment was made based on the performance coefficient prepared by Sentelhas and Camargo. It was observed that air temperature and solar radiation were the components that most contributed to justify the variations throughout the year of the reference evapotranspiration. The Hargreaves and Samani equation, in its original form, performed well, which was further improved with local adjustment. The use of the original or locally adjusted Hargreaves and Samani equation is recommended for the calculation of reference evapotranspiration in the State of Pará, in cases where the use of the Penman-Monteith equation is not feasible.
