Abstract

Seedling emergence is determinant the yield of corn crop. Salt stress is considered one of the most severe abiotic stresses, and corn is affected by this stress worldwide. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the importance of using corn seeds with higher vigor to overcome salt stress during germination and seedling formation. Four hybrids were used, four seed lots with high vigor and four seed lots with low vigor and submitted to five levels of salt stress (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mmol L-1 of NaCl). Germination, abnormal seedlings, length of the aerial part, root system and total seedling and their respective dry masses, number of roots and seed reserve mobilization rate were evaluated. All variables evaluated presented a reduction with the increase of the stress level and the seedlings originated from high vigor seeds presented a better physiological performance. The salt stress negatively interferes with the performance of the seeds independent of their physiological quality and seeds of high vigor provide a greater capacity to overcome the salt stress conditions.
