Morphometric relationships for the Amazon river prawn, Macrobrachium
amazonicum (Heller, 1862), were obtained by means of monthly samplings carried
out at Ajará-Panema community, Cametá county, Pará State, from June, 2004 to
May, 2005. As catching gear were used 50 units of a type of wooden trap, distributed
at every 2 meters, with a 4-hour soak time. At the laboratory the specimens were
identified, separated by sex, measured and weighted. The weight/length relationship
presented a positive allometry with a significant difference in relative growth between
males and females. The high values of the correlation coefficient indicate there to
occur statistically-significant dependence among length variables. Tail length was
found to be bigger than carapace length both in males and females. The tail accounts
for 54 % of the individual’s weight in males and females, and the carapace for 44 %
of the individual’s weight in males and 43 % in females.
