Resumo

The fishing activity in Northern Brazil considered as one of the most important
nationwide, from the social and economic viewpoints, being carried out in the area
bound by the Orange and North capes. This region is endowed with a huge yield
potential on account of encompassing one of the world’s largest shrimp fishing

grounds, hence being taken as the main industrial fishing resource in Northern
Brazil. Given the economic relevance of shrimp fisheries to Pará State, the object
of the present study was to analyze the spatial occurrence and abundance of the
brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus subtilis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967). The data were
obtained through fifteen experimental fishing cruises carried out by the Revizee
Program using trawl nets on board R.V. Almirante Paulo Moreira (Cepnor/Ibama) ,
in the period from August, 1996 to December,1999. The total take of brown shrimp
in six fishing cruises was 180.48 kg which is equivalent to about 15,000 individuals.
The occurrence of that species, based on experimental fishing cruises performed
by the REVIZZE Program, was shown to concentrate mainly on an area bound by
the Orange and North capes, and in the vicinity of Marajó Island, Pará State.
