Resumo

This research work was designed in order to make a preliminary assessment of
sites for the development of tourism facilities on the lower Branco River region,
southern Roraima State. During the open season, from November through March,
three expeditions were carried out in that area on board the boat João Padeiro.
The sampling layout consisted in the evaluations of suitable of sites for sport fishing,
collection of species by means of rod-and-reel and a survey of social and economic
aspects through the application of questionnaires in local communities. A total of
390 individuals, primarily cichlids, were caught, the peacock bass (Cichla spp.)
being singled out as the most abundant. This fish, because of its sporting
performance and big size attained in in the region, stands out as one of the potential
attraction factors for sportfishermen. The surveyed area, because of its scenic
beauty, state of nature conservation and isolation from large urban centers may
represent one of the last frontiers to be explored by the sportfishing tourism.
However, it has been found out the poaching, inefficient law enforcement and poor
environmental control has brought about a mounting situation of conflicts involving
the local social actors. As a result, the identification of a great potential for the
development of the sportfishing tourism was highlighted as long as the required
actions for managing the use and access to fishing resources. This framework
should rely on a process of joint sound administration that allow public agreement
on land usage, besides the suitability of infrastructure tools ands labor qualification.
